Mix It Up: Step

It was the best of times, it was the most confusing of times...

Step class is a wonderful way to get a good burn, but it's definitely not for the wimpy. You will jump, step, sweat, spin, sweat, lunge, and sweat some more, for 55 minutes to an hour.

What is step class?
A quick wikipedia search states:

Step aerobics is a form of aerobic power distinguished from other types of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform (the step). The height can be tailored to individual needs by inserting risers under the step. Step aerobics classes are offered at many gyms and fitness centers which have a group exercise program.
Step aerobics was innovated by Gin Miller around 1989. After a knee injury, Gin consulted with an orthopedic doctor, who recommended she strengthen the muscles supporting the knee by stepping up and down on a milk crate and from this she developed the step regimen.
Step aerobics can also be involved in dancing games, such as Dance Dance Revolution or In the Groove.
For me, step is a high impact/high intensity workout. I'm not much of a sweater, as I've stated in previous posts, but that seems to go out the window when I'm in a step class. I sweat like a beast, run out of breath, get confused, all the while burning hundreds of calories. I'm just about convinced that I burn extra calories from the confusion heating up in my brain when the instructor adds additional steps!

Step is a fun way to mix up a mundane week of workouts. If you have a fun instructor, and some good music, you will surely burn tons of calories. I burned over 600 calories in my last step class! (You can check out this handy calorie calculator for step aerobics from Self magazine.)
